We keep the dark room tidy and stocked with the chemicals necessary
for black-and-white developing. As a paid member, you are entitled
to use these facilities, but you must provide your own printing
paper.
If you ask at the SU Reception (middle of Portland Building,
next to union shop), they can provide you with the
sign-up sheet to book a session in the darkroom.
The sheet is divided into
30 min sessions.
Advance bookings are restricted to 4 sessions
per member
per
week,
however
if
you turn up to find an empty session, claim it as your own by writing
your name on the sheet.
It is possible to
obtain the darkroom key from the SU Reception only during
its opening hours, 9am - 5pm
(weekdays). Similarly, the room can only be booked for use
during these times, as we cannot guarantee that the key will be
obtainable
from the porter’s office outside these hours. Weekend
use is possible, but the key has to be obtained from the
porter’s
office, near the front steps of the Portland Building.
Workshops have already started running. (See 'Workshops'
for more info).
These are needed for darkroom access. The procedure is to
present your card to the porter to obtain the key to the
darkroom.
If you are without one, ie you haven't signed up yet, click
here to find out how.
To get there, go through the main entrance of the Portland
Building (up the steps), walk straight towards the other
side of the
building, before you get there take the first stairs down
on your right, turn right at bottom, and the darkroom is
down the
corridor on the right.
If you that feel you need more help using the darkroom
after you have attended one of our darkroom workshops we
are able
to provide you with some 1-to-1 tuition to get you started
on your
own.
Have a read of the help documents on the left that detail
what to do when printing your own enlargements and refresh your
memory.
If you still require some help then get in contact with
us via the email address above left, (put Darkroom
Tuition in the subject line of the email) and
we will schedule a time to help you.
Or simply email us any specific questions
that you might have. To get started you will need a set of black and
white negatives (Jessops can develop these for you for a cost of around £3,
make sure you tell them you don’t want prints, just
the negatives). Bring these along, together with some photographic
paper (can also be bought in Jessops)
