ChemSoc is running a 5-a-side football tournament. To enter a team, just find the sign-up sheet on the ChemSoc noticeboard in the common room and fill in your details. It’s being held at the Jubilee sports centre and it’s free to enter, but anyone without a sports club membership will have to pay £5 to get in the building. And if you’ve got membership, remember your student card! The format of the tournament will depend on how many teams enter, but one thing that is certain is that the winners will be sent to Loughborough to play in their ChemSoc tournament! There will also be a case or two of beer for the winning team, and in true amateur football style, oranges will be provided.

After the roaring success of our first guest lecture of the year, Chemsoc is proud to present Dr. Geraint Morgan of the Centre for Earth, Planetary, Space and Astronomical Research at The Open University. As usual, there will be free nibbles and drinks in the foyer beforehand or afterwards, or both.
Synopsis
Planetary exploration pushes the boundaries of science and engineering and often results in the development of novel technological solutions. PSSRI have developed miniaturized mass spectrometer systems for both the Rosetta and Beagle 2 space missions. In addition, to their primary role in answering some of the most fundamental questions in planetary science the technology developed for the missions have any number of applications here on Earth. The talk will concentrate on the work being conducted to translate this space-flight technology in particular the recent work, funded by the Wellcome Trust, to develop a rapid diagnostic test for TB for resource-poor settings. The talk will also discuss the group’s unique analytical capabilities that have been applied to a host of terrestrial applications, in areas as diverse as Homeland Security, forensic analysis, sports testing, analyses relevant to the water industry, as well as their potential application as non-invasive in vitro medical devices.
Biography
An analytical chemist with over 15 years of experience in the application and development of mass spectrometer systems for terrestrial and space flight applications.
